Arch Insurance

Project Title: Arch Insurance Messaging Infrastructure.

Mission: Create reliable middleware messaging infrastructure that will enable the customer to establish the foundation of its new Enterprise Information System (EIS) including new operational data warehouse and claims management system. Provide means for more efficient and secure integration with outside reinsurance partners.

Environment:

Operating Systems: Solaris, Linux, Windows
Programming Languages: .NET, Java
Databases: Oracle, MS SQL Server
Other Products: Informatica

Requirements: Enable all involved applications to participate in a meaningful business flow via Point-to-Point and Publish/Subscribe Messaging. Provide messaging infrastructure interface that will allow external reinsurance partners to communicate with internal EIS. Enable applications to subscribe not only based on the topic names, but also based on specific data content using XPath technology. Deploy J2EE server that will host applications acting as entry points to the new operational data warehouse. Integrate J2EE server with other products so that global XA transactions are possible.

Challenges: Customer has no existing messaging infrastructure or expertise. .NET applications are unable to participate in Publish/Subscribe style of messaging. Customer has no current J2EE server deployed in its environment.

Proposed Products:

  • WebSphere MQ provides an award-winning messaging backbone for deploying enterprise service bus (ESB) today as the connectivity layer of a service-orientated architecture (SOA).
  • WebSphere Message Broker transforms and enriches in-flight information to provide a level of intermediation between applications that use different message structures and formats. Message Broker also acts as a hub in a Publish/Subscribe data network.
  • JBoss Application Server - a J2EE certified platform for developing and deploying enterprise Java applications, Web applications, and Portals, JBoss Application Server provides the full range of J2EE 1.4 features as well as extended enterprise services including clustering, caching, and persistence.
  • JBoss Hibernate is a powerful, high performance object/relational persistence and query service.

Solutions:
To address all of the customer needs following solutions had been implemented.

  • Network of WebSphere MQ queue managers deployed in a hub and spoke architecture. This design allows any-to-any reliable messaging exchange between applications without significant infrastructure management overhead.
  • Message Broker implementation that allows JMS and non-JMS clients to exchange data using Publish/Subscribe technology.
  • Broker based Publish/Subscribe Proxy service that allows client applications to participate in data exchange with other ESB application while being completely isolated from the underlying product dependencies. Client applications are also able to indicate their interest in specific messages not only using topic names but also based on the message content using XPath technology.
  • .NET Messaging Wrapper which enables new and existing .NET applications to communicate via MQ with other entities in EIS using standardized XML formats.
  • JBoss Application server deployment offers highly scalable environment to host data warehouse applications using EJB and MDB technologies.

Benefits:

  • Highly available and cost effective service oriented architecture that uses best of breed products.
  • New application development and deployment life-cycle is reduced considerably.
  • Adding new applications is as simple as configuring new service.
  • Improved auditing and recovery facilities.
  • Changes to the data are occurring as part of global transactions across the entire enterprise.
  • Applications are able to address much more complex business requirements with ease and efficiency.
